Gideon and Ali
Gideon and Ali were very good friends They went to the same school in Hadar From old news papers they built a kite, Together flew it into blue sky
Some times they walked to the beach Swimming and throwing stones into the sea Or walked up the Carmel Mount And sat under the shadow of an Olive Tree
Though, they always wondered Why could they never visit each other’s homes?
Before they grew older and stoped to fly kites They made a pact of eternal friendship Together they wrote their first poem: Poem of love and peace
They only started to dream of a big future When Gideon was called to join the army…
Ali stayed home, writing poems of love Some times poems demanding equality He also wrote endless letters to Gideon Reminding him of their friendship
And when Gideon was on leave They still sat under the shadow of the Olive Tree
One night Ali woke up when the police arrived In the name of national security! They said… Arrested his father and blew up his home Ali went to live under the shadow of the Olive Tree
The day that Gideon leaves the army On a blue bus to meet his friend Gideon, smiling, embraces Ali Ali is crying and pulls the trigger
Big explosion! Shatters lives! Time stops… Gideon’s left shoe and Ali’s glasses frame is all that’s left… The bus is a black wreck of twisted iron
The Olive Tree losses its leaves.
